July 2008 – Issue No.5

Welcome to our latest e-newsletter, plenty has happened at the centre since our last one.

In April our ever popular quiz night was once again a success. Our next quiz is on Saturday November 22nd. Put a date in your diary and get a team together.

June saw Freddy Mercury (aka Gary Goodmaze) return to the Community Centre. This was a sell-out event and everyone enjoyed a fabulous evening’s entertainment. We hope to have Gary back again soon.

Also in June, ‘Petals in the Wind’ spiritual development group held a psychic evening, proving to be very popular and raising £500 for local charities.

We have nearly completed our latest project of installing a toilet in the Lankester Lounge. This will mean the room can be let entirely separately to the rest of the building whilst not interrupting the users in the main hall. We have also had a CCTV system installed funded with the remainder of our £12,000 winnings. This is required for the prevention and detection of crime and for protecting the safety of our committee, our users and the building; it will not be used for any other purpose.

We are excited about our latest project of replacing the highly inefficient heating system, currently electric wall heaters. We are looking into installing an energy efficient heat recovery system.  We are aiming to make the centre as energy efficient as possible within our existing constraints.

School Holiday Sports - Child UK in association with East Herts DC are running sports activities at the Community Centre from 4-6pm on Tuesday, 22nd 29th July, and 5th 12th 19th August for 8-11 year olds.  Just turn up, no need to book. Sessions are FREE!

On Sunday October 19th we will be holding a celebratory hall naming ceremony which will be attended by local dignitaries, the parish council and other local organisations.

Kids hungry after school? Visit our new tuck shop which runs weekdays for an hour after school in the Lankester Lounge. A selection of sweets, drinks and ice pops are on sale at really reasonable prices. We hope to continue this during September until the weather starts to turn.

Rosemary Conley classes will be starting on a Monday from September. Please check the website for more information.

Oh no it isn’t, it may be a long way away, but the Pantomime is coming back again, this year booked on Sunday December 28th.

Chaplains Pantomimes will be presenting ‘Dick Whittington’ Tickets will be available very soon.

Have you joined our 100 club? We are half way through the year but it is not too late to join. Applications are open to new members and current members to buy additional numbers.  We had a successful year last year with just over £700 profit being made for the community centre and over 36 prize winners.  Application forms can be downloaded from the website here, or contact Helen Surridge on 01920 821603.
